最も気を使ったのは、日本人が欲しいと思うような製品を作る方法を知ることだった。当時はシンガポールで組み立てて、それを日本に送っていた。箱を開けたときに最初に見るのはマニュアルだが、それが反対を向いていたとする。すると全て突き返される。アメリカではそういう経験をしたことはなかった。マニュアルの向きが違っていたからと言って、製品自体が変わるわけではないのに。
そう。日本は、違った。われわれの価値観と彼らのそれは違った。アップルは細部に注意を払う。「open me first」、箱のデザイン、折り目、紙の質、印刷。それらに全て注意を払う。ブルガリや高級宝石会社の品物を買ってくるような感じ。当時の日本は、そういう経験を望んでいたんだ。
